Hurricane Irma churns through Caribbean islands, possibly en route to Florida

  • Hurricane Irma, a Category 5 storm with winds of 185 miles an hour, is "battering" the U.S. Virgin Islands, according to the U.S. National Hurricane Service.
  • U.S. National Hurricane Center forecasters said the storm was "potentially catastrophic." 
  • The storm could make landfall in south Florida this weekend.
