- The Dow Jones industrial average inched higher to a record close on the second-to-last day of trading in 2017. All three major indexes are set for monthly gains.
- Copper briefly rose more than 1 percent to its highest in nearly four years. Oil held just below the psychologically key $60 level, a 2.5-year high which it touched earlier this week.
- "Those that are in [the market] are hoping we might be able to make a new high at the close of the year," said Robert Pavlik, chief investment strategist at SlateStone Wealth. "I think 2018 is going to be a pretty good year."
