Sharp’s new RoBoHoN phone is smart—and has legs

This new smartphone costs about $235 per inch, but it also walks.

Sharp on Thursday started accepting preorders for its adorable RoBoHoN robot, a 7.7-inch-tall (19.5 centimeter) humanoid that also comes with all the basic features of a smartphone.

The company said it plans to release the robots in Japan on May 26 at a price of 198,000 yen — or more than $1,800.

RoBoHoN runs off the Android mobile operating system and comes with 16 gigabytes of storage and an 8-megapixel camera. The tiny robot walks on two legs and can operate via voice commands.

Sharp developed the robot phone in collaboration with University of Tokyo professor and Robo Garage CEO Tomotaka Takahashi.

Earlier this month, iPhone manufacturer Foxconn signed a deal to acquire two-thirds of Sharp for $3.5 billion.
