Power Play: 2U a winner in small-caps

Small-caps are beating large-caps and mid-caps year-to-date, up more than 2 percent.

Lamar Villere, co-portfolio manager of the Villere Balanced Fund, tells CNBC's "Power Lunch" on Thursday he is looking at small-caps that can succeed without international growth.

"Generally, small-caps have better opportunity for growth, less currency risk than large-caps, less interest rate risk," Villere said.

One of his top picks now is 2U, which has deals with top universities to offer online graduate degrees.

"Partners include NYU, Yale, Northwestern, Cal-Berkeley, USC, UNC-Chapel Hill, Syracuse. Students get the same degree, same quality education, and pay the same tuition," Villere said.

He sees great margins once 2U's programs are up and running, especially from programs where they offer the same degree through multiple schools. "2U will add 6 programs this year, 9 next year, and keep growing after that," Villere said.

2U is higher during trading and is up 26-percent over the past 3 months.
