Apple is preparing to offer two new smartphone models with screens larger than 4½ and 5 inches, The Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday, citing people with familiar with the plans.
Due for release in the second half of the year, the device will feature metal casing similar to what is used for iPhone 5S, whose 4-inch screen is Apple's largest for an iPhone.
The larger devices are still in preliminary development, and the sources warned that Apple's plans weren't final and that the company could change course, the Journal said.
The plans for larger iPhones come as Apple faces increasing competition from rivals such as Samsung, which offers screens as large as 5.7-inches with its Galaxy Note 3 device.
Apple declined to comment, the newspaper said.
