Amazon may push Kindle checkout system for physical retailers

Amazon, which has become virtually synonymous with online retail, is looking into providing brick-and-mortar retailers with a credit card payment system based around its popular Kindle devices, sources told The Wall Street Journal.

The scenario is just one of the approaches the Seattle-based company is considering to strengthen its presence in physical retail, where shoppers still make 90 percent of their purchases. Amazon may also offer retailers other options such as website development and data analysis, according to the sources.

Last year, Amazon acquired some technology and hired employees of a San Francisco-based mobile payments start-up.
